It’s Time To Right Some Wrongs!
Good Morning,
BFL’s Daily Dozen here. Much like our chooks foraging in the morning, we’re here early to catch the worm.
Today we’re going to right some wrongs and address one of the biggest myths/misconceptions that there are about raising chickens.
Here’s what’s in store:

The Biggest Myth About Chickens
For all you “seasoned” chicken owners, this one will come as no surprise.
But, what IS surprising, is that some people still believe chickens are VEGETARIAN.
This Is Simply A Misconception/Myth.
Chickens Are Opportunistic Omnivores (AKA Mini Raptors).
To anyone who still feeds their chickens a strictly vegetarian diet, you are denying your chooks a whole food group that can play a huge part in the health and wellbeing of your flock.
After all, there’s a reason our fluffy-butted friends love eating bugs, worms, frogs, lizards, snakes, and even mice.
Top 3 “Meaty” Treats To Feed Your Chickens
We’re not just preaching here, we literally feed our chickens meaty treats on a semi-regular basis.
Because of the high protein content in meat (either raw or cooked), feeding meaty treats to your chickens can be highly beneficial to ensure they’re getting enough protein (16-18%) in their daily diets.
This is especially important when we are approaching winter, or even when you notice your chickens molting (as they require a higher amount of protein in their diets to replace their feathers AS WELL as continue regular egg production.
Here are our top 3 “meaty’ treats we feed our flock:
Meat Scraps/Bones/Carcass: Barbaric to some, but a feast for our flock. Chickens will literally clean all the meat off of any meat scrap, bones, or carcass you have to spare for them. Beef, pork, turkey, they’ll take whatever we offer them!
Leftover Cooked Meat: If you can’t finish that steak, pork chop, beef mince, etc. you know there are always some hungry mouths to feed in your backyard.
So long as there isn’t copious amounts of seasoning, sauces, or garlic/onion in your meal – your meaty leftovers will be the highlight of your flock’s day!Scrambled Eggs: – Although not technically “meat”, where would we be if we didn’t mention feeding our flock scrambled eggs?
- We literally feed our flock a scrambled egg mix every few weeks. About 1 egg per three hens, cooked scrambled, adding the crushed egg-shells in for extra calcium too!
